Berghaus Heated ClothingBerghaus Heated Clothing

As one of the best known and respected outdoor brands, Berghaus are constantly seeking to innovate and to lead in their chosen sectors, including outdoor clothing, sleeping bags and footwear.

As part of this drive, Berghaus began working with EXO² in the latter part of 2002, on an original design for what would become the Heatcell range, a unique range of heated clothing. 'Would it work?' 'Would anyone want to buy it?' These and other questions could only be answered by committing to the project and the Heatcell Gilet was born. The Heatcell Gilet was the 1st heated clothing product rolled out by Berghaus in their Heatcell range. The Heatcell Gilet is a fleece containing the EXO² Thermomesh heating system, edged with conductive tinned copper braiding, encapsulated in a nylon envelope, and positioned at the lower back, dispersing kidney chills and spreading warmth around the torso.

Powering the Heatcell pad, for up to 3 hours on a single charge, is a 14.8v Lithium-Ion battery, weighing 193gms, and small enough at 7cm by 2cm by 8cm, to fit easily within a pocket containing the tiny plug connector. The battery is fully charged by a Li-Ion charger unit over a 2-3 hour period. A stylish, slimline clicker-switch completes the system, removable for washing purposes and allowing instant control for the user, with heat being felt almost immediately, and rising to the optimum 43°C temperature within 15 minutes.

Launched at the ISPO International Trade Show in Munich during February 2004, Berghaus's first heated clothing product; the Heatcell Gilet has attracted numerous plaudits in the trade press, along with a significant boost to sales following an article appearing in The Observer newspaper, selling out stocks available at the time. We have seen that users include those enjoying outdoor and winter pursuits for longer, and without discomfort or chills, along with outdoor workers who have long hoped for an internal 'radiator' to alleviate long periods of relative physical inactivity at low temperatures.

The 'innovation' tag of the partnership between Berghaus & EXO² has resulted, not only in the continuation of this heated clothing product for Autumn/Winter 05, but the further introduction of two new Heatcell heated clothing products; a fully featured heated Jacket, including state of the art fabric switching, with full & half-power options, offering up to 6 hours continuous use, and a superb heated Mitt, including tiny 4.5cm by 1.5cm by 5.5cm sized batteries, weighing only 61gms each, and fitting discreetly into a custom designed interior pocket for ease of operation and improved dexterity.

This partnership of innovators seems intent on developing yet further, with field trials planned in relation to sleeping bag warmers as our next joint challenge. Berghaus are on a mission to keep us all comfy and warm; EXO² are making sure this objective is met for all the varying user needs which can arise!
